Generative AI Policy

Faculty are encouraged to create their own generative AI policies on a class-by-class basis. Course-specific policies
should include clear guidance about permitted use, context for such use, and expectations for attribution and
citation. Generative AI tools can present issues around handling of intellectual property and FERPA-protected
information; reach out to IT, MCLA’s FERPA officer, Academic Technology, and Freel Library as needed when using
these tools.

In the absence of a course-specific policy, the default MCLA generative AI policy applies:
Students may not use generative AI to substantially complete coursework without prior permission from
the instructor. It is the student’s responsibility to obtain approval for AI use and citation format from the
instructor.

Any violation by a student of a course-specific generative AI policy or the default generative AI policy would fall
under the guidelines of MCLA’s Academic Integrity policies and processes. Results from AI detection software
cannot be the sole justification for a formal Academic Integrity investigation.
