The Creative Writing Minor invites students majoring outside of the English major to pursue their passion for creative expression, to augment their current field of study, and to join a vibrant literary community both in the creative writing classroom and at a myriad of events. Students in the minor have opportunities to hone skills in writing pedagogy and editing & publishing. They might find themselves reading their work at open mics or receiving mentorship from esteemed visiting authors as they dive into this highly personalized field of study at MCLA.

Students graduating with a minor in Creative Writing will be able to:

• Craft creative texts that demonstrate a keen sensitivity to language, form, style and effect;
• Develop an intertextual awareness, learning to analyze texts in relation to others, and demonstrating how language, style, form and genre are co-constitutive and inextricable with meaning;
• Work collaboratively within peer groups to discuss, analyze, and offer constructive criticism of creative work-in-process;
• Gain exposure to the world of writing and publishing through reading contemporary texts, attending events & readings, as well as presenting and / or performing their work in public forums;
• Gain confidence bringing creative work to fruition through the revision and editing process.
